Reflections and Changes
In our last newsletter, I mentioned the importance of taking time to reflect on our lives, to identify stress points and to consider strategies for achieving greater peace. I mentioned as well that Kim and I are going through this process, and I think we’ve come to some conclusions.
We recently obtained enough funding through our PlantPure business that we are now able to launch a long-envisioned strategy with a local health system. This is an initiative that we believe holds the potential for demonstrating a transformative food-as-medicine model that could be replicated far beyond our local area. This is a health system that serves people who are insured through Medicaid, underinsured, or uninsured. For lots of different reasons, we are excited about this project.
Given this development, we’ve decided to modify our strategy for this Substack publication. As I mentioned in our last newsletter, we have not been successful in organically growing our following since its launch four months ago and have not been successful in generating revenue sufficient to cover our time. We are, for the most part, undertaking this work on a volunteer basis. Kim loves creating new recipes and other culinary information and I love writing, but we can’t do this work without sufficient financial support, and it also competes with the time we would like to dedicate to our new project.
Rather than publishing a newsletter every week, with additional content for paid subscribers, we are moving to an entirely free model and will publish newsletters on an ad hoc basis. We will send out a newsletter whenever I have something interesting to report or the urge to write about something of interest, and/or whenever Kim would like to share new recipes or other culinary information.
It’s premature now to go into further details, but later, as we make further progress on our food-as-medicine initiative with our local health system partner, we’ll hopefully have lots to report, and I suspect you’ll find this information interesting.
Many of our paid subscribers committed to monthly payments, so we have cancelled those recurring charges. Some of our paid subscribers, though, paid ahead for the year. We are happy to refund the amount covering the remainder of those subscriptions, although we hope those subscribers might consider leaving this for our ongoing support as we transition to our new healthcare project. But if you are a paid subscriber who paid ahead for 12 months and you would like a refund for the balance of your subscription, please let us know.
We hope you can continue with us because we have a small but very passionate and dedicated group of subscribers. We would love to retain this following because we think we may have information to share in the future that will be of interest to you.
Thanks for your support and stay tuned!
In peace,
Nelson & Kim

What great news that you have opportunity to introduce a food as medicine model into your local healthcare system. What incredible impact that could have to, as you said, move beyond your local community. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you, Kim, and your father, from far away in Kauai (though I'm sure your mom is also a rock-solid support worth acknowledging!). Your commitment, integrity, brilliance, and humility (and great recipes) have touched me for years. Food as medicine is so powerful. My husband is soon to be receiving hospice care. His advanced dementia has taken its toll. Despite my working full time, spending time at the hospital, and not having much time for the exercises I love, I am holding strong and feeling well... in large part because of the way I eat. I have enjoyed this newsletter, as well as reading the comments of your readers. I look forward to hearing updates about this exciting new project unfolding. Mahalo Nui Loa and warm aloha to all of you, Nancy
Please keep me on the newsletters, and I do not need a refund on the annual subscription. I look forward to reading about your new endeavor and any other news you want share.
